NEW ARTS FESTIVAL FOR MANCHESTER
A new and timely arts festival is about to hit Manchester! The Threepenny Festival, of cabaret, poetry and plays, has four consecutive nights of music and drama at three different locations across Manchester. Supported by Patrons Noreen Kershaw, Maxine Peake and Juliet Stevenson. The Threepenny Festival is to be launched on Thursday the 14th of November, 7.30pm at the 3Minute Theatre in Affleck’s Palace, followed by events on Friday the 15th and Saturday 16th at Unitarian Chapel Cross St, and a grand finale, Hard Times Cabaret, at the Moston Miners Arts Club, Sunday the 17th at 7.30pm.
The Threepenny Festival is inspired by the lives and work of German émigré artists Bertolt Brecht, Hanns Eisler and Kurt Weill. These were the key composers and writers who revolutionised the performing arts in the first half of the last century. It’s the brainchild of social activists Aidan Jolly, Eric Northey, Derek Martin and Michael Herbert, who all feel that these neglected figures from the last century have things to say that are relevant to us today. “We’re living in a world plagued by austerity, migration, war and welfare cuts, whilst bankers’ bonuses get bigger and bigger,” said musician Aidan Jolly. “That contradiction alone would have appealed to these artists and they’d have done something about it creatively.”

Salford’s Working Class Movement Library is marking both Parliament Week and the Explore Your Archive campaign with an Open Day on Saturday 16 November between 10am and 1pm on the theme ‘Women in Democracy’. It focuses on items from the Library’s rich collections about how women have fought for an equal say, from the first female councillor in Eccles to the women in the Co-operative movement.
The lack of women MPs is a constant complaint about parliament. With women making up over half of the population, so it goes that they should make up half of parliament… During the Open Day visitors can drop in to the Library and find out more about those pioneering women who fought against this inequality. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to discuss the items on display, and answer questions.
The Working Class Movement Library event runs alongside the politics festival POLLfest, which runs at Manchester’s People’s History Museum from 15 to 21 November with a series of events and activities including Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell talking on what it’s like to be a female MP today, and a comedy evening including an open mic session.
Admission to the Open Day is free; all welcome; light refreshments available.

Remember fallen anti-fascist comrades, Ivan Khutorskoy and Carlos Palomino
Over the past few months, both Clement Meric and Pavlos Fyssas (Killah P) have been murdered by the far right and huge solidarity demos have been held in their honour. This is a great sign that solidarity can extend throughout the world.
On the 11th November it will be six years since Carlos Palomino was stabbed to death by a Neo-nazi, and on the 16th November it will be four years since Ivan Khutorskoy was shot dead in his home by Russian fascists.
We will be holding a solidarity demo on Saturday the 16th November to remember both Carlos, Ivan and all fallen antifascist comrades and friends.
We hope that everyone can make it, it is important that we never forget what has happened and that the fight continues!
We encourage all groups to come and attend, please bring banners and flags.

ANTIFA – Chasseurs de skins (France)
Members of the Red Warriors, an antifascist gang in France, 1985. Red Warriors used violent force to remove Neo Nazi gangs from France and provide safe spaces for immigrants during the rise of white nationalism and an outbreak of violent crime against people of colour. They formed a squat called “L.U.S.I.N.E” and were considered the most effect gang to counter nazi violence, working to instill fear in their opposition.
