An email from David Rovics:

Anne Feeney is Sick

Dear friend of mine and many of you, Anne Feeney, rabble-rousing performer whom the late Utah Phillips called “the greatest labor singer in North America,” is in the hospital in her home city of Pittsburgh with a large tumor in her chest. She’s had to cancel tour plans and has incurred major expenses as a result of this situation. She does have health insurance, but she’s already had to pay $6,000 just for co-pays and all that junk. Please go to fellow-travelers-advisory.blogspot.com/ and send her encouragement and money.

For the next Manchester Film Co-operative screening we’ve teamed up with the Working Class Movement Library to bring an evening of rare films and discussion about the women’s movement.

The evening’s on Tuesday 17 August and includes fascinating films such as A Woman’s Place – a 20 minute film that covers the first Women’s Liberation Conference in February 1970 – and Six Sides of a Square which documents the lives of working mothers in 1966.
The films will be followed by discussion led by Louise Livesey, a lecturer in women’s studies at Ruskin College, Oxford.

The the evening being facilitated by Bernadette Hyland of the Working Class Movement LIbrary.

Film starts at 7.45 sharp. Entry to film £3 or £2 for unwaged, low waged or students.

It will be a rare and interesting evening.

A couple of weeks ago we received a couple of zines in the post.

I did a quick review of both, but thought I’d do them justice by talking about the zines in more detail…

First up is TNS Records Free Fanzine for July 2010.

We’ve received, and played, music from TNS for the past few months and this zine covers news of band on the label cataloguing the latest releases and featuring interviews with Faintest Idea and Bootscraper.

It also includes a feature on Strummercamp, which featured a stage run by TNS records. The zine also includes interviews with non TNS bands including Under the Pavement’s favourite urban rail punk band Eastfield as well as Pour Habit  and Dean of Slit Records. There’s also articles on a number of topics!

If you want a copy best to email: tnsrecords@hotmail.co.uk

Second is One Way Ticket to Cubesville issue 8. This mixes interviews and features. There is an interview with Sturgeon of SFH (which was broadcast on Under The Pavement earlier this year). Other intervieweees are Cock Sparrer, Discharge, “Jewish D Beat” group Jew-Dis, Afternoon Gentlemen and Ahab.

On the features front there is a mix of serious and fun stuff. A Punx Pub Quiz which I only got one answer to, a feature on the ranters and some great vegan recipes (though I haven’t made any of them yet!).

The zine is proudly done with scissors and pritt stick!

If you want a copy you can get it for 50p and an SAE (stamped self addresssed a5 envelope) from Cubesville, PO BOX 4388, Manchester, M61 0FL or visit http://ticket-to-cubesville.blogspot.com/ or you can paypal £1 to cubesville@hotmail.com.
